Flameshot: annotate a screenshot before you send it

Capture a region, add arrows or text, then save or copy the result. Check v14’s monitor-selection workflow, desktop portal support and your actual hotkey before relying on it.

Requirements

A supported Windows x64 or Linux desktop session. On Wayland, use a working portal integration appropriate to your desktop or compositor. Package versions and dependencies vary by distribution.

Quick start

For Windows x64, use the MSI installer or portable ZIP on the official v14.0.0 release page. Linux users should choose the package matching their distribution and architecture, or consult the documented package-manager route; distribution packages may be older than v14. The latest stable release checked on October 27, 2026 is v14.0.0, released June 19, 2026. Start with flameshot gui on Linux or flameshot.exe gui on Windows, capture a harmless region and verify that saving or copying works before assigning a shortcut. Wayland requires a working desktop-portal integration; follow the project’s guide for your compositor. These are documented steps, not an installation Boloop performed. This recommendation covers Windows and Linux; consult the project separately for macOS.

Make a screenshot explain one problem

Flameshot combines region capture with editing tools such as arrows and text. It is useful when a bug report needs to show which button or area you mean. A small starting task is to capture the affected region, add one clear annotation, then save the image or copy it into your report. That workflow is based on the official documentation; Boloop has not installed or benchmarked this release.

Try capture before configuring a shortcut

The stable release checked on October 27, 2026 is v14.0.0, published June 19. Its release notes describe a different multi-monitor workflow: choose the screen before drawing the capture area. Linux capture relies primarily on desktop portals, with Wayland integration depending on your desktop or compositor. Check those conditions before treating a failed shortcut as a capture failure.

There is a useful recent user report. In issue 5017, rashaurl describes Windows 11 x64 and v14.0.0 with an ISO keyboard. Ctrl plus the physical key between left Shift and Z saves as a binding but does not trigger capture; running flameshot.exe gui manually works, and the report says another global shortcut, Ctrl+Q, works correctly. The issue remained open when checked on October 27. This is one attributed report about a particular key and setup, not evidence that all Windows shortcuts fail.

Boloop’s practical suggestion is to verify manual capture, annotation and the saved file first, then test your chosen hotkey separately. For Hyprland or Sway, use the project’s specific portal guide rather than copying an unrelated desktop’s configuration.

Choose where the image goes

Saving locally and copying to the clipboard are available workflows, but the official feature list also includes Imgur upload. Do not describe the application as incapable of sending images to a third party. Check the action you are taking and keep private material out of an upload you did not intend.

Flameshot is worth considering when annotation is a frequent part of sharing screenshots. The recommendation rests on official features and the attributed user report above. It is not a claim of universal compatibility, a new October release, or a Boloop-made product.
