Requirements

Python 3.10–3.14, as documented by the current repository. Use an isolated environment and install only the format extras you need. Some OCR and cloud integrations require separate services or credentials.

Quick start

Create a Python virtual environment. Install the official PyPI package with pip install 'markitdown[pdf, docx, pptx]'. Convert a known local file with markitdown sample.docx -o sample.md. Compare the output with the original before batch processing. See the repository for other extras and platform setup; Boloop has not installed or tested the package.

A useful bridge into a text workflow

Microsoft's MarkItDown converts documents into Markdown for LLM input and text analysis. It is worth considering for a folder of Office files that needs one readable intermediate format. The project explicitly prioritizes extraction over visual fidelity; it is not an archival replacement for the original files.

Start with a representative sample

Use the official package and only the format extras you need. Pick a small, non-sensitive document containing headings, a table and a link. Convert it, then compare those elements with the original. This is our suggested acceptance check, not a test Boloop has run. Keep originals and record conversion failures before scaling up.

Real reports set the limits

The verified release is v0.1.8, published September 21. On October 14, James Wade reported that chart-heavy PowerPoint files with whole-column series could take hours with this version. A separate PDF-table issue documents lost table structure. These are specific user reports, not a measured failure rate. Large charts, scans and layout-sensitive PDFs deserve their own sample checks.

MarkItDown runs with the current process's file and network privileges. The official security guidance recommends sanitizing untrusted inputs and choosing a narrow conversion function. Optional services may send content elsewhere; review their configuration before using private documents.
