Zed: a code editor for reviewing agent-written changes
A desktop editor with code navigation, Git views and a debugger. Start with a small repository and compare editor views with the actual diff before trusting a completed AI task.
Requirements
macOS, Linux or Windows meeting Zed’s official requirements. Linux needs Vulkan 1.3 and the documented desktop portals; Windows needs a supported 64-bit system and DirectX 11 GPU. There is no supported web edition.
Quick start
The stable release checked on November 4, 2026 is 1.26.2, published October 28. Use the official download page for your system. With the relevant package manager already installed, the official alternatives include brew install --cask zed on macOS and winget install -e --id ZedIndustries.Zed on Windows. For Linux, read the official installation and distribution-specific instructions before choosing a binary or installer. Open the editor’s About information to check the installed version, then open a small repository you are authorized to inspect. Boloop did not run these installations.

Keep the editor and the evidence together
Zed is Zed Industries’ desktop code editor for macOS, Linux and Windows. It brings file editing, project navigation, Git views and debugging into one workspace. It is worth considering when a coding agent edits files in a terminal and you want a separate place to inspect the result. This recommendation is based on published documentation and a real user report; Boloop has not installed or benchmarked Zed.
What the current release adds
The official 1.26.2 release notes list Pyrefly as an optional built-in Python language server, expandable nested values in debugger hovers, and DWARF debugging for WebAssembly sources in the JavaScript debugger. These are specific workflow features, rather than evidence that an AI-generated change is correct. AI integrations may have separate service terms and costs; do not assume that downloading the editor includes free model access.
A small first check
Open a repository you understand. Inspect a changed file in the editor, then compare it with git status --short and the relevant git diff output in that same repository. Check staged changes separately with git diff --cached. These commands are read-only checks, and none was executed by Boloop for this recommendation. If two views disagree, resolve that discrepancy before accepting or committing the change.
What a real report shows—and what it does not
In issue 66447, liel-almog reported mismatched Git sidebar and editor views while using terminal Codex with Zed 1.26.2 on Fedora 43. Read the follow-up as well as the initial report: the reporter later confirmed a nested .git directory and thanked the participants, and the issue is closed. That record supports checking repository structure and the actual disk diff. It does not establish a general Zed defect, and the automated bot’s early root-cause guess is not a verified diagnosis.
Finish with behavior, not a clean-looking diff
The official platform requirements still matter, particularly Linux graphics support. Use the stable download and its matching documentation first. After reviewing the changes, use the existing AI-generated code acceptance checklist to check the requested behavior, boundaries and evidence. A clearer editing workspace helps review; it does not replace testing.
